Final Fantasy IV

Commands renamed to "Dummy" in the English release retain their original names in the EasyType, though most were removed from both versions.

Character attributes (other than HP and MP) follow a set progression from starting level up to level 70. After level 70, the change in attributes with each level (again, except for HP and MP) is selected randomly for each level from a list of eight possible class-specific outcomes. While they still tend to increase on average, for any given level, a character's attributes may stay exactly the same or even decrease.

You can force desired results above level 70 by saving before a character levels and loading if you don't like the change. Much patience may be required.

For the level 99 tables, "Average stats" refers to the character's most average stats at level 99 (based on each outcome happening with equal frequency). "Best stat total" is one possible level 99 outcome, chosen to maximize the quantity (str + agi + stm + int + spr), and may not necessarily be the most desirable in practice depending on personal preference. "Worst stat total" is one possible level 99 outcome, chosen to minimize the same sum. Where multiple possible outcomes have the same totals, I picked an average one.

たたかう Battle Fight

Attack with equipped weapon. All classes have this as their first command.

アイテム Items Item

Use an item. Also used to activate spells on weapons that have them. All classes have this as their last command.

チェンジ Change Change

Off the left side of the battle menu. Use to reverse the party's rows. The back row is a more defensive position.

ぼうぎょ Defend Parry

Off the right side of the battle menu. Defend until next command input.

Defending characters have doubled defense power. This usually reduces damage taken by more than half.


あんこくきし Dark Knight DKnight

暗黒騎士 in kanji.

Pronounced with a short 'e' and soft 'c's. Pretend it's spelled more like "Sessil" if that helps. And YouTube sounds like they got this right in the DS remake. Wow.

あんこく Darkness Dummy

Sacrifice HP equal to 1/8 of maximum (rounded down) to deal defense-ignoring damage all enemies. This *can* kill Cecil, so be careful.

Damage = [Attack * HitX * 1/2], plus a random factor from 0 to either 255 or half the calculated quantity, whichever is less. The net result is roughly half attack damage, but ignores defense and evade. This damage is non-elemental, but Undead targets take 1/4 damage, and Slimes take none. Cecil must have a weapon equipped to use Darkness.

This command is removed in the English version, but unlike every other such command, Darkness is still present in the EasyType.

He's a fighter and nothing else, and his stats reflect that. HP is mediocre, and while there is some good potential for physical stats at high levels, odds are you'll never see them. The Darkness command and Deathbringer sword are really the only things that make Dark Knight Cecil in any way interesting.


りゅうきし Wyrmknight Dragoon

竜騎士 in kanji. A Wyrmknight (adapted from the boring literal translation "dragon knight") has nothing whatsoever to do with dragoons except that dragoons happen to be named after a firearm with a French name meaning "dragon". Going by Wikipedia, a dragoon originally referred to a soldier intended to deploy by horse and fight on foot, but the modern usage refers to mounted regiments, usually ceremonial rather than functional in nature.

カイン Cain Kain

Cain is pronounced with a hard 'c' and a long English 'i', as though spelled perhaps as "Kyne". It is not pronounced like "cane". All information I've been able to find suggests "Cain" as the original spelling, not "Kain", and I see no reason to oppose it. カイン is also the Japanese redition of the Biblical Cain (as in Cain and Abel).

ジャンプ Jump Jump

Leap into the air to land on one enemy after a delay for bonus damage.

Acts as a normal attack with doubled attack power that ignores row, and also adds (level / 4) to hit rate, but can't get critical hits. The jump completes more quickly with higher agility. Cain counts as not present when in the air—he can't be targeted, physical attacks that were targeting him hit someone else instead, single-target spells that were targeting him miss, and group spells act as though he was never there to begin with.

Solid growth, with decent intelligence and remarkably high spirit for someone who doesn't have the least bit of magic. While they don't do him any good on offense or for healing, they're still good for a solid edge in magic defense compared to characters like Yang and Cid, and the spirit cuts down the duration of certain status effects.

召喚士 in kanji. There are two Summoner classes internally, one for child Rydia and one for adult Rydia. This is the child version.

Rydia's good growth potential beyond level 70 makes it possible for her to max four of her five stats, something few characters can manage. Stamina lags somewhat, but she'll usually be in the back row anyway, attacking with whips or spells so the range penalty doesn't affect her.


けんじゃ Sage Sage

賢者 in kanji. Functionally similar to the recurring Red Mage (not found in this game), except for the complete lack of any physical prowess.

Tella never learns Quake, Death, or Flare.

Although Tella learns Meteor, he can't normally *use* it since it costs 99 MP and his maximum of 90 never increases no matter how high his level goes.

おもいだす Remember Dummy

Randomly casts a spell against all enemies. Always fails if Tella has Silence or lacks the MP to cast the spell selected, and may fail anyway.

According to Deathlike2's Algorithm FAQ, the odds are as follows: Break 5%, Bio 5%, Tornado 5%, Death 5%, Fire 15% Blizzard 15%, Thunder 15%, Toad 15%, and a 20% chance to fail outright. The outcome functions like casting the spell normally, except for targeting (but enemies don't react to it as magic).

Note that even when even when Tornado or Death is selected, this still targets all enemies, normally impossible for these spells! This is also the only way for Tella to cast Death, since he never actually learns it... which makes you wonder how he manages to cast it here at all, let alone target a group....

After the event in which Tella learns the majority of his final spell list, this command is no longer available.

This command is removed entirely in the English and EasyType versions.

In case it wasn't obvious, Tella's stat growth is simply awful. He seems fairly strong only because he starts out quite a few levels ahead of the other characters, then learns most spells long before anyone else. Despite that, he still gets less impressive the longer you have him. It's even possible for all his stats to drop to 1 by level 99!


おうぞく Royalty Bard

王族 in kanji. While he may act as a minstrel in combat, he's still a prince, not a spoony bard.

I'll admit "Gilbart" isn't the prettiest name, but how does that become "Edward"?.

Command List
うたう Sing Sing

Sings a song. Requires a 2-handed weapon equipped (i.e., a harp). Each result (other than failure) mimics a normal spell.

Normally, this has a 25% chance each of ちんもくのうた (Silence Song = ●Silence), ゆうわくのうた (Temptation Song = ●Confuse), こもりうた (Lullaby = ○Sleepel), or no effect. When the user is under Toad status, it will instead always result in かえるのうた (Frog Song = ○Toad). Success rate is calculated as for the spells.

くすり Medicine Dummy

Uses one Potion to heal each party member 12~19 HP. Fails with no Potions available. And no, you can't substitute a stronger type of potion.

There seems to be an off-by-one error in the coding of this command. If you have exactly one Potion, the command fails, but the Potion is consumed anyway.

This dubious command is removed in the English and EasyType versions.

かくれる Hide Hide

Activates Hiding. Gilbart is invulnerable while Hiding, but cannot take any actions except Defend, Change, and Appear (and running away).

Like when Cain is in the middle of a Jump, Hiding Gilbart can't be targeted, physical attacks that were targeting him hit someone else instead, single-target spells that were targeting him miss, and group spells act as though he was never there to begin with.

Gilbart will automatically use Hide when his HP drops to critical levels (25% or below), unless he is uncontrollable (Sleep, Berserk, etc.), any opponent is flagged as a boss, or he's the only surviving character (though any queued command will take place first).

Automatic Hiding has some oddities. You can still use Appear, but Gilbart will just automatically Hide again as soon as he can. More unusual, though, is his behavior when all other party members are dead. This will cancel Hiding (by automatically Appearing), but *only* if Gilbart's HP is critical. As long as his HP is high, he can keep on Hiding forever. How odd, but it's a good opportunity to flee combat, assuming the battle doesn't forbid it.

あらわれる Appear Show

Replaces the Hide command while Hiding. Cancels Hiding status.

Though he lacks useful abilities, Gilbart at least humiliates Tella when it comes to stats. Exceptionally high growth potential after level 70 even makes it possible for him to max out four of his five stats, though you'd need to sacrifice two agility for that extra one stamina.

ねらう Aim Aim

Like a normal attack, but treats the user's hit rate as 255 and the target's evasion as 0. Only usable when equipped with a bow and arrows.

Monsters don't react to this as a physical attack, oddly enough.

Unfortunately, Rosa lacks any really good level-up possibilities past level 70, so that limits her potential. On the other hand, even her bad ones aren't very bad, so at least the average is solid. At the very least, she'll never lose any agility or spirit, and those are probably her most important stats.


モンクそう Monk Karate

モンク僧 with kanji. 僧 is roughly "monk" again. The class is, of course, a reference to the fighter-monk skilled in martial arts, not to the cloistered scholarly type.

Gathers energy to strike one enemy after a delay for bonus damage.

Acts as a normal attack with doubled attack power, and also adds (level / 4) to hit rate. The charge completes more quickly with higher agility. While charging, MEvdX is 0 (can't avoid magic). Gather is comparable to Jump except that the user is vulnerable while preparing to strike. However, it can get critical hits, which Jump cannot.

This command is removed in the English and EasyType versions.

けり Kick Kick

Damages all enemies at reduced power.

Damage = [(attack / 2) - defense] * HitX, plus a random factor up to either 255 or half the calculated quantity, whichever is less. The net result is roughly equivalent to attacking each enemy with halved attack power. Slimes take no damage.

がまん Endure Dummy

Casts ●Protect on the user at no MP cost (+5 defense). This can miss or be Reflected, and will fail under Silence status.

The defense increased message will always appear, but it only actually works when the animation displays.

This command is removed in the English and EasyType versions.

Synchronizes with Porom to cast Minimeteor (64/256 chance) or Miniflare (191/256 chance) against all enemies. Slight chance to fail (1/256 chance).

Miniflare is 50% stronger and costs 10 MP, but Minimeteor (20 MP) inflicts full damage against multiple targets and also ignores Reflect. Casting takes less time the more agility the twins have {in total?}. Damage is calculated using the intelligence attribute of whichever twin is closer to the first character slot (the one that appears first on saved games—from top to bottom on the menu and battle screen, the slots are numbered 2, 4, 1, 5, 3), so always put Palom ahead of Porom.

If either twin is rendered unable to cast while the joint spell is charging, the spell fails.

つよがる Bravado Dummy

Adds 16 to the user's effective intelligence for the remainder of the battle, repeatable up to 99 total intelligence. Great against bosses.

This command is removed in the English and EasyType versions.

Note that Palom gains a point in intelligence each and every level from 10 all the way to 70. Such consistent growth is quite rare. Beyond level 70, his intelligence still tends to shoot up, and even in the worst case, his agility and intelligence can never drop.

Note that Porom gains a point in spirit each and every level from 10 all the way to 70, much as Palom does in intelligence. Also mirroring Palom, her spirit still tends to shoot up beyond 70, and even in the worst case, her agility and spirit can never drop.

Cecil will intercept physical attacks directed at the selected ally and take the damage himself.

Cecil's row is used to determine damage, not the target's. He will not intercept damage while Defending, uncontrolled, or in critical condition (25% HP or less). Characters being attacked by themselves or other characters are also exempt.

Cecil will also automatically intercept damage for other characters who are in critical condition (25% HP or less), unless one of the above conditions prevents him from doing so.

かばわない Don't Cover Off

Replaces the Cover command when it is active. Cancels a previously activated Cover. Has no effect on automatic Covering.

Sluggish growth in Paladin Cecil's early levels may be an intentional effort to offset how quickly he gains these levels. Other than agility, which is roughly the same, Paladin Cecil's stats are well above Dark Knight Cecil's, especially HP and spirit. High level 70 stats plus decent growth potential beyond 70 let him max out every stat but intelligence, which is the least useful one for him anyway.

Unused in any version, but the name appears with the other commands, and the command itself is configured to target all enemies. Presumably meant to be an airstrike. Hacking it into a command list works fine, as long as you never try to use it... doing so crashes the game.

Thanks to Yang's HP growth oddity, Cid is the only character who can reach 9999 HP without help from HP-boosting apples.

召喚士 in kanji. There are two Summoner classes, one for child Rydia and one for adult Rydia. This is the adult version. The practical differences are that the adult version lacks the White Magic command and can't use White Mage equipment, but can use the Power Wrist and Giant's Bracer.

なげる Throw Dart

Throws a weapon at an enemy for boosted damage. The weapon selected must be throwable.

Damage = (level * weapon's attack) + (0~98). Ignores row and enemy defense.

ぬすむ Steal Sneak

Attempts to steal from an enemy. The item stolen is always the most common drop. Multiple steals are possible. Failure may result in taking damage.

The steal rate depends on the user's level (UL hereafter) and the target's level (TL hereafter), and is thought to be approximately 5% when TL >= UL, or 4 * (UL - TL)%, capped at 95%, otherwise. The formulas for chance to take damage on fail and amount of damage taken are unknown. Steal will always fail on allies and on opponents with a 100% drop rate (typically used to force a unique drop).

Could that have been intended to be 10% of max HP? Or possibly 10 MP? Regardless, this is incredibly useless by the time he joins.

This command is removed in the English and EasyType versions. Good riddance.

Like Tella, Foosooya has terrible stat growth. In fact, the only one of his attributes that increases at all before level 70 is max HP, and that not by much. Beyond 70, his stat growth is just as lazy as Tella's, though at least his stats can't all drop to 1 even in the worst possible case.

The class name takes data from the command list and was never meant to be displayed like this. The menu portrait looks like a Pygmy in all black pixels.
