Back to Sahasralah

After retrieving the crest, Link returns to Sahasralah.

Ah, so you've managed to obtain
the [Crest of Courage]... I shall
tell you a tale I know, then.
Long ago, there was a clan of those
who protected the Hylian royal family.
They were called the Knight Clan,
keepers of the Crest of Courage,
but I'm afraid most of them perished
in the battle with the fiends when
the Seal of the Seven Sages was
put into place. The Hero is supposed
to appear from the Knight Clan.
...  Very well, Link, I shall
believe in you. You should
obtain the remaining crests.
Also, take this with you.
I give you a treasure that has been
handed down in our Sage Clan.
Oh!? You got the Pendant Of
Courage! Now I will tell you
more of the legend...
Three or four generations ago,
an order of knights protected
the royalty of the Hylia.
These Knights Of Hyrule were
also guardians of the Pendant
Of Courage.
Unfortunately, most of them
were destroyed in the great
war against evil that took
place when the seven wise men
created their seal. Among the
descendants of the Knights Of
Hyrule a hero must appear.
...I see. Link, I believe you.
You should get the remaining
Pendants.
And carry this with you.
This is a treasure passed down
by the families of the wise
men. I want you to have it.

魔族 (mazoku) is one of those lovely terms that doesn't translate, but is similar to "demons" in meaning. Though not always necessarily evil as such, depending on which myth or work of fiction you're looking at, 魔族 almost invariably have some sort of supernatural powers, usually destructive in nature, and generally stand in opposition to the gods or are at least hostile toward humanity. I've translated it as "fiends" here.

Sahasralah gives Link a pair of shoes that wouldn't be out of place in 14th century Europe, but go well with Link's outfit.

I received the Pegasus Shoes.
Hold the A button for a set time,
and I can dash and bodyslam.
He gives you the Pegasus
Shoes! Now you can execute a
devastating dash attack!
(Hold the A Button
for a short time.)

The dashing attack is useful for run-by stabbings, moving around faster, breaking down some weak walls, and knocking things out of trees and other high places.

There is something hidden in a
cave east of Lake Hylia that will
be of use to you. Obtain it.
A helpful item is hidden in the
cave on the east side of Lake
Hylia. Get it!

Here and There, or Around the Overworld in 30 Minutes or Less or Your Money Back

In a chest in the cave east of Lake Hylia that Sahasralah mentioned...

ice rod
I found the Ice Rod!
Its sharp chill cleaves the air.
Pay attention to the magic meter!
You found the Ice Rod!
Its chill magic blasts the air!
But watch your Magic Meter!

The Ice Rod freezes most enemies. Some are immune, and some take damage (usually dying instantly) instead of freezing. Frozen enemies do not unfreeze. Using the Ice Rod consumes 16 magic (out of 128).

The entrance to the Desert Temple, which contains the next crest, is blocked off, with no clue to entry except for an inscription in some strange language that looks like Hieroglyphics. But there's a cave nearby with a helpful old man who looks a lot like Sahasralah...

My name is Ajinar.
It seems as though something is
happening within the sacred land
that the Seven Sages sealed...
A prophesy passed down
among those of Hylian blood,
starting with the Seven Sages,
tells of a [Great Catastrophe].
It is said in that prophesy that
"the Hero will stand in the desert,
holding the writings of Mudora"...
They say that if you have Mudora's
Writings, you can understand the
language of the Hylians.
It should be in the village archives...
You ought to make sure to obtain it.
If you are to be the [Hero], that is...
I am Aginah. I sense something
is happening in the Golden Land
the seven wise men sealed...
This must be an omen of the
Great Cataclysm foretold by
the people of Hylian blood...
... ... ...
The prophecy says, "The Hero
will stand in the desert holding
the Book Of Mudora."
If you have the Book Of Mudora
you can read the language of
the Hylia People.
It should be in the house of
books in the village...
You must get it!
If you are the person who will
be The Hero...

There's a book that looks promising, but Link can't reach it. However, while dashing around town, he catches a kid trying to run from him...

I-I give up! So it's with those legs that
you abducted Princess Zelda... you
don't look like such a bad guy, though.
Anyway, if you're that quick on your
feet, maybe you ought to try ramming
into various places...
It looks like there's useful stuff caught
in trees in this village, for starters.
Come on, try it, okay!
I can't believe you caught me!
With your speed it must have
been easy to kidnap Zelda...
You don't look like such a bad
guy, though...
Anyway, because you have
such quick feet, it might be a
good idea to run and bash into
many things...
For example, the trees in this
village have many useful things
hanging in their branches...
Well, just try it, OK?!

And so it came to pass that Link did ram the bookshelf, and the book did fall, and verily, it did contain the writings of Mudora.

I found Mudora's Writings!
Now I can read the ancient
characters the Hylians used!
You found the Book of Mudora!
You can use it to read the
ancient language of the Hylia!

And that's the only thing it does, but there are enough things to read to make it useful.

Unlike later Zelda games, the "Hylian" in this game is simply a random jumble of characters with no particular meaning.

Now that he can translate the inscription on the tablet, Link returns to the desert.

Pray thee silently before
this tablet. An thy wish be
heard, the road shall open...
To open the way to go forward,
Make your wish here
And it will be granted.

Link takes off his hat and prays for a short while. In response, several nearby statues rearrange themselves, revealing the entrance.

Desert Temple: Second Crest

The temple is very sandy, but not much more difficult than the last. The monsters tend to hide under the sand, but they're fairly predictable.

At another telepathic tile...

Link, this is Sahasralah.
Make sure to acquire the treasures left
in each of the monsters' dwellings.
Link, it is I, Sahasrahla.
You must never fail to find all
the treasures in each dungeon.

やかた usually refers to a mansion or small castle, though it can also refer to something that imitates the form of a house, such as a temporary shelter.

It's not long before Link finds the big treasure for this area...

power gloves
I got the Power Gloves!
Strength wells up in both my arms.
I can even carry stones!
You got the Power Glove!
You can feel strength in both
hands! You can pick up and
carry stones now!

The function is as stated. Additionally, Link's hands now look gray, as a small visual indication that he's wearing the gloves.

Link has to go outside and lift some stones to enter the final area of the labyrinth. This section introduces the annoying "wait for the floor tiles to stop flinging themselves at you" not-exactly-puzzle (just hide in the doorway) and the "light four torches at once" puzzle.

The boss battle consists of three giant worm-like monsters that leap out of the sand unpredictably, flinging debris diagonally. A worm will die after eight sword hits, four arrows, four Bombs, or two Ice Rod blasts. It's easiest to land hits with the sword, though. The last worm remaining begins flinging debris horizontally and vertically, in addition to diagonally, but is otherwise unchanged.

Another heart container appears, and a blue pendant falls into the room. Link takes it.

I got the [Crest of Power]!
I've gotten another step stronger!
Now, let's head for the last crest!
You won the Pendant Of Power!
Your goal of finding three
Pendants is in sight!
Go for the last one!
