Boundary Kingdom (Maxim)(Tia)(Selena)

This castle doesn't have a town next to it. It turns out that this is because the town is built into the castle. As the party enters the courtyard, they hear a loud noise behind them. A soldier goes to investigate.

Wh, who goes there!?

The soldier is blasted across the courtyard into the far wall. Maxim and the others step out of the way as someone walks in. He has moderately spiky straw-colored hair, wears rust-colored armor and a blue cape, and leads a small army of monsters. I'm pretty sure "Shudder" starts playing, but I need to check that.

Hmph, I've got no use for small fry.

A man with shiny and very spiky blue hair and wearing heavy armor runs out of the castle.

What's with all the noise!!
Huh? Who're you?
Where do you think you are!

Are you the strongest
man in this castle?

Not number one in this castle.
I'm number one in the world!

Hmm, you say interesting things....
My name is Idura. I've come here
on a certain someone's orders.

"Monkey person?"
You're acting on a
monkey's orders?

Bad pun time. さる, as Idura uses it, means "a certain...", but it's not the term most often used for that, and there's a far more common word with the same pronunciation that means "monkey".

Idura:
Not monkey!!
When you deliberately want to hide
a name, you say a certain someone!!
Don't you know the language!?

....well anyway, what did you
come to this country to do?

Idura:
Kh... all right, I'll say it plainly,
so it's easy to understand.
I came to destroy this
Boundary Kingdom.

…………。 ............
Idura:
What's wrong, cat got your tongue?

Came to destroy this country?
With those wussy monsters?
You're pretty clueless, huh.

Idura:
I don't want to hear that from you!
You, take him out!

The monsters advance and surround the man from the castle.

Hmph! You've got lousy luck, though.
To have messed with the country
that's got me, of all places!!

Idura:
Hurry up and shut that man up!!

The monsters converge on the man who came from the castle, but he avoids them, moving too quickly to see.

Idura:
What, he vanished!?

Idura and the monsters look around, trying to figure out where he went. I'm pretty sure 1-25 "The Strongest Man" starts playing now, and if not, it does pretty soon.

Where're you looking! Up here!

He drops out of the sky, crashing into the clump of monsters with an explosive impact, and killing all but a single Jelly (the extremely weak monster from the very beginning of the game) that by some stroke of luck manages to avoid anything worse than being blown across the courtyard.

Heh. This is "Exploding Sword",
one of my hundred special moves.
Before my skills, the likes of your monsters
aren't even fart, even if there's a hundred!

へでもない (he de mo nai) is an expression that means "utterly worthless", but the literal meaning really is "not even fart". I'm sticking with the literal meaning here because he makes a reference to it later.

Idura:
Kh! R, remember!
I'll pay you back for this!

The music stops, and he starts warping away, but the man from the castle interrupts him.

Wait!
Idura:
What?

Repaying is something to express feelings
of gratitude to the person you're dealing with.
And so, there's no reason for me to accept
any repayment from you.

A similar pun. 礼 usually refers to an expression of gratitude (thanks), but Idura is using it to mean payback, as in revenge.

Idura:
How far do you mean to go in
insulting me! I'll be sure to come
for revenge! Remember that!

This time he actually leaves. "Castle" fades back in.

What was that guy all angry about?
Well whatever you make of it,
there's no such thing in this world
as anyone who outdoes me.
Heh, I'd expect no less of me,
even if I do say so myself....

Maxim:
...he is strong.

Selena:
...yes. He's strong, but an idiot.

Maxim:
...yes.

The man from the castle finally notices the one remaining Jelly.

Hm?
Looks like one wimp's
left behind.

Suddenly, a blonde man wearing a fancy green cape bursts out of the castle....

Where's the monster that's
trying to destroy my country~!!

...closely followed by a dirty-blonde man wearing a blue cape that isn't quite as fancy, who quickly spots the jelly.

Prince Alec! It is over there!
Prince Alec:
Oh, so it's this one!
All right, Josef, stand back.
I will exterminate it.

His spirit may be admirable, but his combat skill isn't. It takes several seconds of back-and-forth fighting before he finally takes down the Jelly, even though it's presumably hurt to begin with.

Prince Alec:
How's that, Josef!
I beat the monster!

Physically feeble Tia can kill one of those barehanded in one hit, and he thinks slaying one with difficulty is impressive...? This does not bode well....

Josef:
Splendid! How splendid!
I, Josef, will not forget the prince's
gallant figure for my entire life!

Prince Alec:
Well, as the prince, defending
my country is only natural.

Josef:
Magnificent!!
I, Josef, am so deeply moved that I can
not see the prince's figure for my tears!

There's brown-nosing, and then there's brown-nosing. How does he say these things with a straight face?

The prince finally notices the man who did all the real fighting.

Prince Alec:
Oh, Heidecker.
You saw me too, right?

Heidecker:
Prince, please refrain from doing
things that are too dangerous.

Prince Alec:
What are you saying? Just who would
protect this country if I weren't here?
Heidecker, you follow my example
and become a little stronger yourself.

Heidecker:
I will keep that in mind.

Prince Alec:
Right. Good attitude.
All right, Josef, we're going back.

Prince Alec and Josef go back inside the castle. Heidecker stands in front of the entrance.

Maxim:
So that man was
Heidecker....

Selena:
At any rate, this is an amazing country.
...in various meanings of the word.

Maxim goes to talk with Heidecker.

Heidecker:
You're a guy I'm not familiar with. But from
your looks, you'd seem to be a swordsman.
...oh, hey, could you be Maxim?

Maxim:
Huh? Yes, I am.

Heidecker:
Really!
I've heard the rumors about you.
They say you've been running
crazy wild all over the place!

Maxim:
I, I'm not exactly
running wild....

Heidecker:
Hey, don't be so modest.
Never mind that, I've been wanting to
meet you some time since a while back.

Maxim:
Did you have some business with me?

Heidecker:
A swordsman's got but one business, right?
A match! Maxim!

Heidecker starts attacking. Maxim holds him off long enough to get a word in edgewise....

Maxim:
P, please wait a minute.
I am not interested in fighting with you now.

Heidecker:
Aw, and I was just getting fired up for
once.... Well, I'll bet you're tired out
from the long trip. By the way, what'd
you come to this country for?

Maxim:
We're collecting information
on a man called Gades.

Heidecker:
If we're talking rumors about Gades,
I've heard them too. I hear he destroyed
Gordovan all by himself. But is it true?

Maxim:
It is true.

Heidecker:
How could there be a guy in this world who
can totally destroy a town by himself...?

Maxim:
Yes, it is a terrifying thing.

Heidecker:
What're you saying, aren't you happy!
Such a strong guy, I wanna try meeting him
some time! Well if you compare him to me,
he's probably like fart though.

Maxim:
...I, I see.

Heidecker:
By the way, about that Gades,
there're also rumors that say
he's come to this area.

Maxim:
Really!?

Heidecker:
Yeah. Besides, that Idura or whoever
from before said he came here on
someone's orders, too.

Maxim:
You mean the one who gave
those orders was Gades?

Heidecker:
It's a guy that can get monsters
on his side... he's not human.

…………。
Maxim:
............

Heidecker:
By the way, not to change the subject,
but who are the young ladies behind you?

Maxim:
Oh right, I've gotten behind on introductions.
She is Tia. My childhood friend.

Tia:
I'm Tia. Pleased to meet you.

Maxim:
And she is Selena-san.
She's a sword-mage of the Parselyte Royal Army.
We are traveling together for the Gades case.

Selena:
Nice to meet you.

Heidecker:
Oh? So you're Selena-san of
Parselyte. I know the name.
I heard you're as good with a sword as any
man, but I never guessed you'd be so cute!

Selena:
My, you are good with compliments.

Heidecker:
Heh, not to brag, but my next strongest
point after the sword is flattery.

Selena:
I, uh... I see.

Heidecker:
Well anyway, the castle's a
mess, but kick back and relax.
Maxim. Once you've rested,
have a match with me. Later.

Heidecker heads back into the castle. Maxim turns to Selena.

Maxim:
...h, he's a candid person.

Selena:
Too candid. Doesn't he realize it
doesn't amount to flattery like that?!

Casual language again... maybe she's just annoyed...?

Maxim:
...well, anyway, let's
enter the castle.

Maxim and the others work their way to the throne room. Prince Alec and Josef are among the people there. A soldier is reporting to the prince.

Prince. Intelligence has come in that
the one from earlier known as Idura has
taken refuge in the northern labyrinth.

Prince Alec:
I see! Very well, I will go beat Idura
in order to protect this country!
Josef, make preparations!

Josef:
Yes, sir.

Heidecker comes into the room and addresses the prince.

Heidecker:
Prince, the northern labyrinth
is a dangerous place.
Please leave Idura to me.

Prince Alec:
No, that man is no ordinary person.
It's doubtful that you could win.
There's no choice here but for me to go!

Heidecker:
Prince!

Prince Alec:
Don't worry. I could beat the likes of
someone on his level with one hand!
Wait here for the news of my triumph.
We're going, Josef!

Josef:
Yes, sir!

Prince Alec and Josef leave. Heidecker runs up to the king.

Heidecker:
Your majesty!

...I'm sorry this always happens,
Heidecker. Will you go for us?

Heidecker:
Of course.
I will protect the prince absolutely.
However, continuing this sort
of thing indefinitely will....

Well, that's like a sort of
a sickness. I feel sorry for
you, but could you go along
with Alec's whims?

Heidecker:
...understood.
I will be on my way, then.

Heidecker, ahh... as far as
possible, help Alec so that
you aren't noticed by him.

Heidecker:
...I know.

Heidecker leaves.

Prince Alec associates with the
people without regard to social
status, so everyone adores him.
If only he didn't have that
misconception that he's strong....

We have no other children
except for Alec.
I'm afraid we've been too easygoing
with him because of that.

Alec has aspired after
Heidecker since he was a child.
He always said he wanted to
become strong like that....
...there would be no problem if only
he had truly become strong from it.

With nothing else to do at the moment, Maxim and the others also head to the northern labyrinth.
